Ward and Moylette set gold standard in Turkey

boxing

BOXING: A YEAR out from the London Olympics, Irish boxing again showed its rude health yesterday as both Ray Moylette and Joe Ward claimed gold medals at the European Senior Championships in Ankara, Turkey.

The haul of two golds equals Ireland’s best at the championships, and that came all of 72 years ago when Paddy Dowdall (feather) and Jimmy Ingle (fly) won their respective weight divisions when the event was staged in Dublin for the first time.

Ingle was just 17 when he won his gold back in 1939, the same age as Ward, who was competing in his first senior international competition.

A member of the Moate Boxing Club in Westmeath, Ward has been earmarked as a special talent ever since he won a World Youth title at middleweight last year before going on to end Ken Egan’s 10-year reign as Ireland light-heavyweight champion last year.

Ward got off to a slow start against the 25-year-old Russian Nikita Ivanov, but came storming back in the last minute of the first round, landing good scoring punches with both hands to take the round 7-3.

The Russian’s discipline was found wanting in the second as he received both a warning and a caution for landing blows under the belt, the first of which cost him a two-point penalty and saw Ward taking a standing eight count.

Ward landed a number of good combinations to add to Ivanov’s problems, taking the round 8-3 to create a nine-point gap at 15-6 going in to the final three minutes.

Adopting a more defensive strategy in the final round, Ward kept his guard high and used the ring to further frustrate the Russian as he showed experience beyond his years to close out the fight.

Ivanov took the final round on a scoreline of 6-5, with Ward claiming gold by the handsome margin of eight points (20-12).

“I’m over the moon, it’s fantastic to win it out, I thought I was brilliant in there,” said Ward, who admitted he was not fazed by his more experienced opponent.

“He tried to bully me a bit but I picked off the cleaner shots, covered up and picked him off. I sparred him in Russia a while back and I knew I had the measure of him.

“I’m the European champion now and that’s brilliant. This is another step on the ladder for me. The next step is the getting to the Olympic Games, that’s my next goal. I’m delighted with my win, delighted to win another gold. If I keep winning gold then I must be doing something right.”

Moylette earlier claimed Ireland’s first gold with a hard-fought 18-10 victory over Liverpool light-welterweight Thomas Stalker, who never quite got to grips with his opponent’s all-action style.

The 21-year-old, who boxes out of the St Anne’s club in Westport, shared the first round 5-5 with Stalker, a silver medal winner at the 2010 European Championships and the current Commonwealth champion.

However, Moylette, working comfortably behind his trademark high guard, fired home some quality body shots and left and right hooks in the second to command a 12-8 advantage at the bell before adding another six points to his advantage.

“I’m absolutely thrilled with the win, absolutely thrilled,” said the 2008 AIBA World Youth champ, who did a handstand in celebration in the ring immediately after his historic victory.

The Irish squad are due to arrive home at Dublin Airport this morning at 10.20.

  Minor hurling

Dublin 1-16 Westmeath 2-7: A 60th-MINUTE goal from substitute Oisín O’Rorke confirmed Dublin’s place in next Sunday’s Leinster minor final following their merited six-point win at Parnell Park on Saturday evening.

The visitors were given the perfect start when Niall O’Brien’s speculative shot found the net in the opening minute but the Dubs settled sufficiently with all six forwards scoring from play as they led by 0-11 to 1-3 at the interval.

Westmeath full-forward David Higgins found the net in the 41st minute but points from Glenn Whelan, substitute Brian McCarthy and O’Rorke’s late goal sealed a meeting with holders Kilkenny at Croke Park next week.

DUBLIN: C Ryan; E Lowndes, C O’Callaghan, S McClelland; C Crummy, J Desmond, M McCaffrey; G Whelan (0-1), C Cronin; E Ó Conghaile (0-3), C McHugh (0-2), C Kilkenny (0-2); C Costello (0-2), A Clabby (0-2, 0-1 free), P Winters (0-3, 0-1 free). Subs: O O’Rorke (1-0) for Winters (half-time), B McCarthy (0-1) for Whelan (50 mins).

Dublin 1-12 Kildare 1-11: DUBLIN ARE still finding new ways to finish matches. Yesterday’s GAA Leinster football semi-final, having been apparently won by Dublin in exhausting circumstances with the team down to 14 for nearly the entire second half, was effectively reduced to a version of “next score wins”.

Eighteen years ago when Dublin manager Pat Gilroy was a player, the county had to pull something similar out of the hat, also in a Leinster semi-final, and Jack Sheedy obliged.

The problem for Gilroy’s side yesterday however, was that they didn’t really look likely to get the vital point. Kildare, their bolt looking well shot during a panicky and wild final quarter, found 1-1 in two minutes at the end of the match to level the scores at 1-11 each and had clear momentum.

Once more however, the match lurched unexpectedly. The intervention of referee Cormac Reilly in the last minute, calling a free from distance against Andriú Mac Lochlainn on Bernard Brogan, gave the latter the ideal opportunity to convert the winning score.

Ireland to drive for five in Turkey.

Boxing: Such is the level of confidence in the Irish camp ahead of the forthcoming European Championships, anything less than a five-medal haul in Turkey will be considered something of a failure.

That was the standard set in Russia this time last year (one gold, one silver and three bronze) and the 10-strong team is aiming to at least match that achievement in Ankara.

The team will fly out to Ankara tomorrow, with the tournament due to start on June 16th, and have entered a fighter in all 10 weight divisions.

Paddy Barnes will defend his 49kg title while Darren O’Neill will seek to go one better than the silver he picked up at the Ice Palace in Moscow.

Others, like John Joe Nevin, will feel they have unfinished business at the event having failed to medal in the past while a number of newcomers are ready to make their names on the world stage.

Joe Ward, in the light heavyweight division, was good enough to keep Olympic silver medalist Ken Egan out of the travelling party and Ray Moylette is also considered a serious prospect.

Yet for all the talent in their ranks, the Irish management is taking nothing for granted.

“The European Championships will be very competitive and if we don’t bring our best performance to the table them someone else will take our place, it’s as simple as that really,” explained head coach Billy Walsh today.

“It will undoubtedly be another big challenge for us,” added team manager Des Donnelly. “However, our preparation has been excellent and we have plenty of experience inside and outside the ring to ensure all the team perform to their potential”.

GAELIC GAMES: HENRY SHEFFLIN returns to championship action nine months after having to leave the field early in last year’s All-Ireland final having aggravated a cruciate ligament injury.

The seven-time All-Ireland medallist is named at full forward on a team to face Wexford in tomorrow evening’s Leinster hurling semi-final. Brian Cody’s selection gives first championship starts to four players: goalkeeper David Herity, corner back Paul Murphy, wing back Paddy Hogan and corner forward Colin Fennelly.

  RTE lose Heineken cup rights

Heinekin cup

Rugby: RTÉ will not be screening highlights of the Heineken Cup for the foreseeable future after rival broadcaster TG4 secured the rights for the next three seasons in what can only be considered a major coup for the Irish language channel.

TG4, which already broadcasts live Celtic League, rebranded as the RaboDirect Pro 12 earlier this week, will also broadcast highlights from the Amlin Challenge Cup after outbidding RTÉ. Both competitions get under way in November, upon completion of the Rugby World Cup.

Since losing the live broadcast rights to the Heineken Cup when the satellite broadcaster Sky Sports struck an exclusive deal with the tournament organisers, RTÉ have been restricted to showing highlights programmes.

****Gaelic News 10/6/11

GAELIC GAMES : THE RICKETY edifice of Gaelic games’ media relations got another rattle with the bizarre news that a group of intercounty managers had been making representations to the director general of RTÉ on the subject of how the station deploys its staff. Moreover, these representations were backed up by an implicit threat, pointing out they had always made themselves available to the broadcaster.

So when a response to their letter had not been received by last weekend, a number of managers told RTÉ personnel they would not be taking part in post-match interviews, one citing “a dispute” with the broadcaster.

Apparently, the DG, Noel Curran, replied to the representations at the end of last week, but his letter would not have been received until a couple of days ago.

At the heart of the matter is the role of Brian Carthy in RTÉ radio’s GAA coverage. In fact, he has two roles – one as Gaelic games correspondent and the other as a match-day commentator. It is in the latter context the representations have been made. Since the mid-1990s, Carthy has provided regular commentaries and came to be viewed as second only to Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh in the match-day pecking order.

Accordingly, he may have had reason to believe he would be promoted to the position of lead commentator on Ó Muircheartaigh’s retirement, which took place last autumn.

Signs that RTÉ may not necessarily have seen it that way were evident when a number of television commentators – Ger Canning, Marty Morrissey and Darragh Moloney – were last year also assigned to radio duties.

Far from being elevated to fill the void left by Ó Muircheartaigh, Carthy has found his profile shrinking and last Sunday he was dispatched to Páirc Uí Chaoimh to report on the Munster football semi-final between All-Ireland champions Cork and Waterford, a less than prestigious marking which to no one’s great surprise turned into a turkey shoot.

The previous evening he had been on commentary duty for the other semi-final, between Limerick and Kerry.

Tyrone manager Mickey Harte stated his concerns and those of his colleagues when talking in yesterday’s Irish Examiner about the perceived demotion of Carthy.

“We just didn’t think that was good practice because we do believe that for Gaelic Games over the years there has been a distinctive voice on radio. And radio is an unique medium. It’s a highly challenging skill to deliver that in a way that paints a picture for people and I think you need to be steeped in the GAA to do that.

“We stated those very things and asked them (RTÉ) – respectfully, I might add – if they would give us a chance to have a chat with them to elaborate on how we felt.”

Harte, a close friend of the broadcaster, obviously feels strongly on the matter and so may not have thought about the optics from Carthy’s perspective – given his other role as Gaelic games correspondent – of managers, whose actions he has to report on and critically evaluate, being seen to intervene so publicly on his behalf.

* Dawn Brown and Nicky Jermyn became the first 3rd kyu Brown Belts of the   All Ireland Karate Association when they graded on the 7/11/2009.            Dawn, who started training with me in Firhouse in 1996 and achieved her 4th kyu grade in 1999, had to suspend her training shortly  after due to the expectant arrival of her third child. Another child later and a few years concentrating on motherhood, Dawn decided to make a well earned comeback.  From 2008 in Ballyroan she trained well and hard and was a worthy recipient of a 3rd kyu Brown Belt on the 7th of November.

Nicky Jermyn had just as arduous a path to his Brown Belt. Having trained to 4th kyu in another kenpo club many years previously, it was a  testament to his resilience and willingness to train and practice regularly that gained him his third kyu Brown Belt. It was also the first time I've ever witnessed in 29 years watching grades someone suffer a serious hamstring tear during a grade. It happened after the forms and half way through the techniques. I put it to him that it may be better if he called it a day and gave his hamstring a chance to recover and reminded him that no exceptions could be made on the night for a grade as advanced as a 3rd kyu.

He refused to accept my advice , taped up his leg and carried on through what must have been excruciating pain levels, completed the techniques and the sparring and achieved an acceptable high standard which we were all very proud of.

Of course he suffered more damage to his hamstring because of his stubbornness but he reckons it was worth it.

Nicky started back training two weeks after his grade but it took two months to get his hamstring right.

Dave Ryan.
